The invention relates to a process and apparatuses for plug formation in screw press separators which serve for separation and pressing of solids from liquids, in particular fibrous constituents, from slurries which arise in removal of liquid manure from animal houses in animal husbandry. The aim of the invention is to increase the range of use and the flexibility of the screw press separators described in various patent applications and to increase the dry matter content in the solids. The object is achieved according to the invention by the counterpressure, which is required for the buildup, transport and discharge of the plug, being built up by the internal stress of the solids at the walls delimiting the plug parallel to the direction of transport. For this purpose, using a screw having constant pitch, the space provided for the plug formation is shaped in such a way that the solids plug, from the end of the screw to the discharge, forms a hollow cylindrical ring, about 70-80 % of its length is enclosed by the screen basket and is mixed and homogeneously compressed by a last screw turn running at 180-360@ to the screw core.
