A process is described which can be carried out discontinuously or continuously for the quantitative catalytic hydrogenation of the nitrite and/or nitrate content of nitrite- and/or nitrate-containing water to give ammonium. According to the process which is suitable, in particular for analytical purposes, nitrite and nitrate can be selectively reduced in each others presence.
