According to the invention, a tubular filter material is used which, for protection against tearing, internally abuts a tubular metallic or synthetic cloth bag. The filter bag is fed via an upper filler port. At the bottom, it is closed by a shut-off element through which the filtrate residues can be discharged as required. The closed end of the filter is either freely suspended in the filtrate collection vessel and the filter bag must be removed for the emptying, or the end port, on which is situated the shut-off element, can alternatively be passed through the base of the collection vessel and filter residue can be removed externally. Gentle shaking of the filter can reinforce the self-cleaning of the filter. Self-cleaning takes place by the filter residues being flushed downwards and collecting there.
