Moist or dry lignocellulosic materials such as straw is treated by contacting it with a mixture comprising an ammonium salt and a base, for example, ammonium sulphate and quicklime. Ammonia is released by volatilisation and /or by reaction with a stoichiometrix excess of quicklime in the presence or absence of added water.
