Hat felt is produced from felting animal (rabbits) hair which is drawn by suction on a perforated bowed bell and fortified on it by high-pressure water jets. The revolving bell is moved past a bank of nozzles which emit their jets at right angles to the surface. The fluid pressure should be 5-35 MPa and the jets have a dia of 0.1-0.5 mm. A vacuum of 0.5-3.5 K is applied to the bell. The water used can have a temp of 10-80 deg C. ADVANTAGE - This provides optimum preconditions for the following fulling stage.
