Indane derivatives useful as fragrance-imparting components are disclosed. The represented indane derivatives by formula (I), <CHEM> wherein ring A is a benzene or cyclohexane ring and R<1> is a hydrogen atom, an alkyl group having 1-4 carbon atoms, or an alkanoyl group having 1-6 carbon atoms, provided that when ring A is benzene, R<1> is a group other than hydrogen atom.
