A golf club (10) comprising a head (12) having a neck portion (20), a shaft (14) having a distal end portion 14a attached (exteriorly or interiorly) to the neck portion 20, and a neck neighboring portion extending above the neck portion 20 at which the shaft is dynamically bent due to an impact of the head with a golf ball during a swing of the golf club. A member (24) is provided in the shaft (14) for increasing a response to the impact. For example, material having a high elastic modulus (e.g. fibre reinforced plastic, a whisker, amorphous material, intermetallic compound, ceramics or metal) under impact is inserted or a section modulus of the shaft is rearranged in the bendable portion. Accordingly, a lower portion of the shaft is initially bent backward relative to the remaining portion of the shaft and then is moved rapidly forward to cause the head to advance while in contact with the golf ball. The member may have holes through which wires of relatively high elastic modulus may be inserted to serve the same purpose. The shape of wires may be different along their lengths (Figure 10). The shaft end portion may have a varying wall thickness or have at least a part thereof treated with shot peening or have a flared part fitting over neck portion 20.

|
