<p>The invention relates to a pharmaceutical composition for the treatment of, and for the prevention of autoimmune disease in humans and animals. The composition comprises as active ingredient an effective quantity of cells expressing MHC molecules of the patients, or other cells compatible with such cells, prepared by incubating them with tissue homogenate, or with total or partial tissue extract from the afflicted organ of another mammal, or with purified antigens or fragments thereof specific for such autoimmune disease so as to present at their surface antigens for such autoimmune disease. Optionally cells which have been subjected to oxidation or cross-linking or both and membranes or membrane fragments thereof, can be used as highly effective ingredient for the treatment of the disease. Cells used are B lymphocytes, macrophages, endothelial cells, dendritic cells astrocytes and the like expressing MHC molecules or adapted to express MHC molecules and to present antigens for T lymphocytes. The invention furthermore relates to a process for the production of the active ingredients of such compositions.</p> |
