An exercise device

The exercise device comprises a flywheel (2) fitted in a frame structure; means for rotating the flywheel; and an eddy- current brake mechanism for braking the rotation of the flywheel in a desired manner. The brake mechanism comprises a copper strap 15 fitted on the periphery of the flywheel (2); permanent magnet pieces (9) attached to an arch (8) mounted rotatably in the frame structure; and means (7, 10, 11) for adjusting the position of the arch so that the distance of the magnet pieces (9) from the copper strap (15) varies in a predetermined manner to achieve a desired braking effect. To achieve a simple and clear display a two arm magnifying lever (16) is attached turnably to the frame structure, the shorter arm (18) of the lever being arranged to make contact with the arch (8) and to follow the movements of the arch (8). One end of a wire rope 22 is attached to the longer arm (19) of the lever (16) whilst the other end is attached to multiplying gear wheels 23 of a rack and pinion display. The arm 19 may act itself as the indicator of a display or may be associated with an electronic display.
