The substrate has a periodic or non-periodic relief defined by a lower level and a higher level of the surface, at a certain height, preferably 0.01-10 microns , of not less than 1/10th of the characteristic dimensions of the patterns forming the higher level, the latter representing 1-65% of the surface of the substrate. The upper and lower levels are connected to each other by walls more or less perpendicular to the plane of the substrate. The upper level may present a continuity in at least one direction from the plane of the substrate, or may not present a continuity in any direction from the plane of the substrate. Preferably the relief comprises a multiplicity of objects more or less identical and parallelpipedal parallel and regularly spaced. The relief may comprises a number of identical, cylindrical craters regularly arranged on the substrate, and with their axes perpendicular to the plane of the substrate. It may also comprise a discrete collection of different objects. Preferably, the substrate can conduct electricity, have antifriction properties, and have anti-soiling properties. Independent claims are given for: (a) a process for forming a substrate having a relief as described above; (b) a glazing unit that includes in part the above substrate; and (c) applications of the glazing unit.
