PURPOSE: To prepare a composition, comprising a specific amount of a hexosaccharic acid and/or its salt or ester as a hair growth promoter, applied to topical use in mammalian skin and hair in order to induce, maintain or increase the growth of hair and useful for a bald head. CONSTITUTION: This cosmetic composition is prepared by including a hexosaccharic acid and/or its salt or ester present in the composition as a hair growth promoter in the total amount thereof sufficient to increase the hair growth of a rat by >=10% based on that obtained by using a control composition without containing the promoter when topically applying the composition within 3 months according to a hair growth test of the rat. A glucosaccharic acid having the formula is especially preferred as the hexosaccharic acid. The sufficient amount of the promoter is 0.0001-99wt.%, preferably 0.1-20wt.% based on the composition.
