PURPOSE:To effectively provide the objective compound by adding a solvent to a reaction product and subsequently subjecting the mixture to a multi-stage filtration process to suppress side reactions, when a phenol is reacted with an olefin in the presence of an aluminum triphenoxide to provide the objective compound. CONSTITUTION:A reaction product prepared by reacting a phenol with an olefin, preferably a 1-5C olefin, especially isobutylene, in the presence of aluminum triphenoxide is mixed with a solvent, preferably an alicyclic hydrocarbon or aromatic hydrocarbon, especially cyclohexane or toluene, usually in an amount of 30-1000 pts.wt., preferably 50-500 pts.wt., per 100 pts.wt. of the reaction product and subsequently subjected to >= two filtration processes, preferably three filtration processes, to provide an alkylphenol useful as a raw material for chemical products such as phenol resins, etc., in a high purity in states wherein side reactions such as the conversion reactions, disproportional reactions or isomerization reaction of the objective compound are suppressed and wherein the organic phase of the solution subjected to the filtration process is readily separated from the aqueous phase. |
