PURPOSE:To prevent the occurrence of cracks at the time of film formation or heat treatment by forming an outer shell layer composed of a material having a martensitic transformation point lower than the martensitic transformation point of a core material on the surface of a roll of a core material and then applying heat treatment to the above. CONSTITUTION:An outer shell layer is formed on the surface of a roll of a core material by coating the above surface with a material having a martensitic transformation point (Ms point) lower than the Ms point of a material constituting the core material by means of cladding by welding, etc. Subsequently, the above roll is heated to and held at the desired austenitizing temp. and subjected to accelerated cooling so as to be formed into a clad roll. By this method, the occurrence of cracks at the time of coating and heat treatment can be avoided.
