The fuel to be metered flows into a U-tube (15). A generator (21) is arranged to act on the tube via a carrier (16) to produce oscillatory motion with a resonant frequency of seventy hertz. Elements (10) isolate the measuring unit (9) from a frame (3). Torsion is developed across a transverse section (18) of the tube about an axis (n) perpendicular to the section. At an end (45) of an input LEG (19) of the tube and its carrier, a force is produced which opposes that at an end (46) of the tube output LEG (20). A position pick-up device uses a magnetic principle to determine the position of either end (45,46) and, consequently, the phase difference between the oscillation at either end. Alternatively, the velocity of the transverse section may be determined.
