PURPOSE: To shorten observation time by optically detecting photons emitted by an electron avalanche generated in a gas phase by receiving electrons emitted form an inspected substance. CONSTITUTION: The chamber 2 of a gas detector limited by electrons 3a and 3b between windows 1a and 1b. A high voltage +HT is impressed on a grid 3b, which is grounded. A high potential difference is generated between both electrodes 3a and 3b, and then the signal of an electrical charge is taken out 4. A radioactive substance to be inspected is set in contact with the electrode 3a. Photons A generated by the impact of the majority of the electrons from an electron avalanche generated by ion electrons generated by the electrons emitted from the substance 5 in the vicinity 9' of the electrode 3b can be observed by a CCD camera 12 with a light amplifier 13 via a diaphragm 10 and a light-converging lens 11. The gas 14 occupying the capacity of a gas detector is formed of a mixed gas containing a noble gas and a photon emitting gas. It is tuns able to observe photon distribution in a very short time.
