The present invention relates to a hydraulically controlled retarder for a diesel engine of a vehicle with separate cylinder heads. This device is characterised in that it comprises a monobloc spacer 1 fixed to the engine block above a set of several neighbouring cylinder heads A, B, C, this monobloc spacer 1 being pierced, above each cylinder head A, B, C, with a respective opening 2a, 2b, 2c and bearing on each cylinder head A, B, C by means of a respective annular sealing gasket 3a, 3b, 3c surrounding the corresponding opening 2a, 2b, 2c, and individual braking heads 8a, 8b, 8c mounted above the respective openings 2a, 2b, 2c of the monobloc spacer 1 and fixed to the respective cylinder heads A, B, C, each braking head 8a, 8b, 8c including the constituent elements of the retarder which are associated with the respective cylinder. <IMAGE>
