PURPOSE: A TV having a language learning function and a method of controlling the TV are provided, the TV outputting character data and voice data with respect to a vocabulary inputted by a user to offer a new vocabulary to the user all the time, thereby improving user's language learning effect. CONSTITUTION: A TV having a language learning function includes an external input terminal for receiving predetermined character data according to selection of a predetermined mode of a user, the second controller(1200) that, when the character data is inputted from a mode selected through the external input terminal, reads font and voice data corresponding to the inputted character data from a font FOM(1800) and a database(1300), respectively, and the first controller(1100) for generating a control signal to the second controller to output predetermined character data and voice data corresponding to the character data.
