PURPOSE:To obtain a decoded picture with excellent quality corresponding to a bit number more than a bit number of each sent picture element by generating a correction code in response to a pattern of a noted picture element and surrounding picture elements. CONSTITUTION:A correction code CR corresponding to the classification of patterns is stored in a memory 25 of a receiver side. The pattern is classified. by 14 bits of a received data to be decoded comprising surrounding picture elements (e.g. 4 picture elements) of a noted picture element. The pattern is supplied to the memory 25 and the correction code CR is read from the memory 25. The correction code OR is used as a low-order bit of the noted picture element and synthesized with a received high-order bit at a synthesis circuit 26. A 4-bit code from the synthesis circuit 26 is fed to a decoding circuit 27 corresponding to the dynamic range and an 8-bit code is decoded. Even when number of bits of each sent picture element is less, since number of bits is increased at the decoder side in response to the required pattern bit, the decoded picture with excellent picture quality is obtained. |
