PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To generate reformed gas in a quantity consistent with the required amount, by operating a reforming device in a state of high efficiency in compliance with the running state of an engine. SOLUTION: Part of exhaust gas is led from an exhaust gas passage 2 of an engine 1 into the reforming device 5 through an exhaust gas flowing amount control valve 4, and the fuel within a fuel tank 6 is supplied through a fuel flow amount control valve 8. The reforming device 5 reforms these to generate reformed gas including at least hydrogen, and supplies it to an exhaust gas passage 2 on the upper stream side of a NOx trap catalyst 12 through a buffer tank 10 and a reformed gas supply control valve 11. In this case, the amount of fuel to be supplied to and the amount of exhaust gas to be led into the reforming device 5 are adjusted in compliance with the required amount of hydrogen to reduce NOx trapped in the NOx trap catalyst 12 and the running state of the engine 1 (temperature of the exhaust gas, etc.).
