SELF-ACTUATING KEYLESS CHUCK

A self-actuating keyless chuck for use with a reversible powered driver is disclosed. The chuck comprises a body (14) which carries a rotatable split nut (38) and a plurality of slidable jaws (16) driven by the rotatable nut (38). A sleeve member (12) is rotatably connected to the body and carries an impact ring (46) provided with a first impact dog (44). A second impact dog (48) is associated with the split nut (38). Spring means (50) are provided to bias the first impact dog (44) toward engagement with the second impact dog (48) whereby the jaws (16) will be tightened or loosened whenever the rotation of the sleeve (12) is restrained and the powered driver is actuated.
