A stream of gas mixture is compressed in a compressor 4 and then passed through a bed 1 or 2 of adsorbent which adsorbs at least one component of the mixture more readily than the other components. Product gas consisting of the non-adsorbed component(s) is withdrawn through line 13. The adsorption step is followed by a step in which waste gas is removed into waste line 19 from the feed end of the adsorbed at a pressure lower than the uppermost operating pressure. During a portion only of the waste gas removal step, the waste gas is recycled along recycle lines 21 and 29, recompressed and mixed with the feed gas. Alternatively, the waste gas is directed via line 24 into waste gas reservoir 26, from which it is removed and recycled into line 29. During the rest of the waste gas removal step, waste gas is withdrawn through discharge line 27. <IMAGE> |
