PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a rectangular alkaline storage battery, capable of restraining drop-out of an active material by maintaining binding strength of an active material layer remaining on the opposite side of an exposed plate core body, even if the plate core body of a plate arranged on the outermost side of a plate group is exposed. SOLUTION: In this rectangular alkaline storage battery, a negative electrode core body on the enclosing can 40 side of a negative electrode plate 10, arranged on the outermost side of the plate group is exposed, an opening hole area rate of this exposed negative electrode core body is smaller than an opening hole area rate of the unexposed other negative electrode core body, and the opening hole area rate of the exposed negative electrode core body is regulated, so as to be 10% to 40%, to thereby obtain the rectangular alkaline storage battery for improving the binding strength of the negative electrode plate 10, capable of restraining drop-out of the active material, which is satisfactory in permeability of gas generated in the battery, improving the discharge capacity ratio at cycle passing time, and having large volumetric energy density.
