A magnetic disc controller unit system is designed to provide high data transfer rates between a disc drive and a computer system. The disc controller (42) is coupled between the disc drive and the port of a CPU (2). The controller is microprocessor based and controls the channel interface with (41), a control interface unit (43) and a data buffer (44). The operating cycle begins with a location instruction to position the read head. Data are transferred into a buffer memory that serves the control unit. An interrupt is generated when the transmission rate of data from the disc to the buffer exceeds that of the buffer to the CPU.
