<p>The mechanical joint (10) includes a spherical member (20) having a pair of grooves (22, 24) in its outer surface, each groove extending circumferentially about the spherical member (20) and disposed approximately 90.degree. from each other. A housing means (40) has a concave spherical socket for receiving the spherical member (20). The housing means (40) includes a pair of slots (41, 42) located proximately at an equatorial plane of the spherical member (20). A frame means (32) is fixedly secured to the spherical member (20) at the intersection of the first and second groove (22, 24) opposite the housing means (40). A first ribbon means (52), slidable within the first groove (22), is attached to pivot pins (56, 58) in the slots (41, 42) of the housing means (40) and is looped around a first pulley (70) within the frame means (32). A second ribbon means (54) slidable within the second groove (24), is attached to pivot pins (60, 62) mounted in the housing means (40) at the approximate midpoints between the slots (41, 42) of the housing means (40). The second ribbon means (54) is attached to a second pulley (74) within the housing means (40). An output means (75) is fixedly connected to the housing means (40). A first and second drive means provide selective movement of the first and second ribbon means (52, 54).</p> |
