<p>PURPOSE:To obtain the titled compound, by alkylating a phenolic compound with a tertiary olefin in the presence of a catalyst comprising an aluminum salt of a phenolic compound, and distilling the obtained crude product in the presence of a specific aliphatic amine without separating the catalyst. CONSTITUTION:An o-tert-alkylphenol is produced by alkylating a phenolic compound with a tert-olefin in the presence of a catalyst comprising an aluminum salt of a phenolic compound. In the above process, the obtained crude product is distilled (preferably at <=200 deg.C under reduced pressure) in the presence of an aliphatic amine having a boiling point of about >=70 deg.C under atmospheric pressure (e.g. n-butylamine, hexamethylenediamine, etc.) without decomposing nor separating the catalyst. When the distillation residue is thermally cracked at a high temperature, the amine is eliminated from the catalyst to enable the reactivation and reuse of the catalyst.
