Lamda-corrageenan-contg. sea plants in admixture with kappacarrageenan-contg. sea plants are preferentially hydrated without dissolving carrageenan. Process comprises sepg. lambda plants from kappa plants by selection based on the water content or properties related to them. Pref. mixt. of such plants are maintained in contact with a water soln. at more than pH10 contg. an NH4, K, Rb, Cs, Ca, Ba, Sr or Mg cation at initial concn. 0.0025M or more at 5-59 deg.C such that kappa plants retain their hard imcompatible fronded characteristics upon which sepn. can take place.
