A discharge lamp device consists of a compound electrode (4) comprising cold and hot cathodes, and a starting circuit. The cold cathode (4b) is connected to discharge side of the hot cathode (4a). The starting circuit controls the lamp current for generating glow and arc discharge between the cold cathode and the hot cathode.
