PURPOSE: A device and a method for recognizing an iris using a digital zoom camera are provided to enhance convenience by enabling recognition in a state that a user needs does not make an eye approach an iris recognition device, and shorten time needed for recognizing the iris by focusing the eye with a distance sensor and precisely focusing the eye with an image process. CONSTITUTION: The digital zoom camera pictures an object with a low resolution in a wide angle mode and pictures the object with the high resolution in a telephoto mode. Pan/tilt tools(33,35,39) enable the digital zoom camera to perform a fan/tilt function by supporting the digital zoom camera. Movably installed lightings emit light at an optimal position when the digital zoom camera pictures the object. For a low resolution mode, the digital zoom camera pictures whole shape of the object. For the high resolution mode, the digital camera pictures only the eye of the object.
