Process and systems for recording information in a recording medium 11 comprising an electro-optical material. In order to carry out a write operation, the chemical constitution of the electro-optical material is modified locally in such a way as to irreversibly suppress its electro-optical activity in certain regions 16, 17 of the said medium which are positioned as a function of the information to be recorded with respect to the zones remaining active. The recorded information is revealed by reading by detecting variations in an electro-optical property of the medium 11. The technique can be applied to the production of memory cards.
