The shadow mask is made of an alloy of invar type having a small coefft. of thermal expansion. The ingot is hot-rolled at 900 deg.C into a plate 2 to 4 mm thick, and then cold-rolled to 0.1 to 0.25 mm before being annealed at a temp. above its recrystallisation point. Groups of elongated holes (6) are etched with longitudinal axes substantially at right angles to the direction of rolling. Shadow mask plates (5a) are cut with their longer sides parallel to that direction, annealed in vacuum or H2 atmosphere, press-formed and oxide-coated.
