The top-bottom direction of an image containing a person image is judged. According to the judgment result, the image is corrected in the actual top-bottom direction. After this, for the longitudinal line and the lateral line formed by a longitudinal and a lateral string of pixels constituting the image, a dispersion value of each image characteristic amount is calculated. For the longitudinal line direction and the lateral line direction, an area where the dispersion value of the image characteristic amount exceeds a threshold value is selected. An overlap area in the image between areas of the respective line directions selected is extracted. Thus, it is possible to accurately extract the area where a person image exists in the image at a high speed.
