PURPOSE:A catalyst obtained by treating a catalyst containing at least one selected from Mg, Mn and Fe with a phenol, or treating a magnesium phenolate catalyst with steam, is used to produce the titled compound from a phenol and an alcohol. CONSTITUTION:In the production of an alkylphenol from a phenol bearing at least one hydrogen atom on its aromatic ring and an alcohol, a catalyst obtained by treating an oxide containing at least one selected from Mg, Mn and Fe with a phenol or by treating a magnesium phenolate with a steam-containing gas at 300-700 deg.C is used to effect the reaction. As the gas used together with steam, is cited an inert gas such as nitrogen or carbon dioxide. EFFECT:The induction period of the catalyst is shortened. USE:Starting materials of polyphenylene oxide, plasticizers, antioxidants, funigcides. |
