For adapting the melt discharge characteristics of an extruder for processing plastic or rubber mixtures to the linear characteristic speed curves of the drive units of further machines forming a production line with the extruder, the actual value/setpoint deviation of the speed and of the extruder drive between actual and linear control characteristics up to its maximum speed is added to the respective actual value in equal percentage increments.
