The invention relates to a method of starting a longwall face equipped with a self-advancing support, a conveyor and a winning machine, in which the preliminary work required for preparing the face equipment is to be reduced and the starting operation is to be simplified. To this end, provision is made for the face equipment to be prepared in the gate road, for it to be shifted in stages in the working direction into the worked face area as excavation commences, and, to protect the gate road to be kept open, for a dam-like support to be placed behind the face by prefabricated support elements being moved to the location of the roadway side of the gate road in accordance with the unit of advance when shifting the face equipment.
