Two=stage nitro:carburising for iron - comprises heating in furnace with catalyst in presence of methanol, ammonia and nitrogen

In a two-stage introcarburising process for Fe and steel parts, a furnace (5) is used with a supply line (4) from a methanol tank (7), having a catalyst (1) at the furnace end, heated by the furnace. A second supply line (8) has three connections (9,10,11), one (11) being joined to the methanol line (13). The other connections are to lines (14,17) from an ammonia tank (15) and a nitrogen tank (16). In the first stage, all three materials are added, producing N and C-contg. gases, while in the second stage the methanol passes over the catalyst. ADVANTAGE - Short starting-up time, requiring simple safety precautions.
