The telescopic shock absorber has two coaxial cylinders(1, 7) which contain hydraulic fluid & compressed gas. On assembly of the shock absorber, an external collar(8) on the inner cylinder(7) is retained by an internal rim(17) near the end of the larger cylinder(1). The internal rim(17) is produced by applying an axial load on the cylinder. The cylinder wall which is weakened by an external semi-circular groove collapses under comprression so that an internal radial rim(17) is produced.
