Method is for producing heat by oxidising fossil materials such as petroleum. The fossil material is used as a nutrient medium for very small organisms, pref. organisms manipulated by genetic engineering. Variants are claimed for the heat exchanger arrangements. USE/ADVANTAGE - In contrast to the usual burning process, this method can be completely harmless to the environment, and can be done in a partic. economical and highly efficient way. The heat from the oxidn. can be used directly or, if the temp. is too low, a heat pump can be used to bring it up to a suitable level.
