ANTIVIRAL TETRAHYDROIMIDAZO [1,4] BENZODIAZEPIN-2-THIONES

Novel tetahydroimidazo[1,4]benzodiazepin-2-thiones are disclosed which possess antiviral activity, and have the structure of formula (I): (see formula I) wherein R1 is C1-6alkyl, C3-6alkenyl, C3-6alkynyl, C3-6cycloalkyl, or C1-6alkyl substituted with aryl or with C3-6cycloalkyl; R2 is hydrogen or C1-6alkyl; R3 is hydrogen or C1-6alkyl; R4 and R5 each independently are hydrogen, C1-6alkyl, halo, cyano, nitr o, trifluoromethyl, hydroxy, C1-6alkyloxy, amino or mono-or di(C1-6alkylamino); and aryl is phenyl optionally substituted with from 1 to 3 substituents independently selected from C1-6alkyl, halo, hydroxy, C1-6alkyloxy, amino, nitro and trifluoromethyl, or pharmaceutically acceptable acid addition salts and steriochemical isomer s of Formula (I). Compositions containing these compounds as active ingredients a nd the use of these compounds for treating subjects suffering from viral infections are also disclosed.
