The particles are wetted with a liquid such as water, and the wetted particles brought into contact with a surface (14) which is at a temperature at or below the freezing point of the liquid. After a specified time period, particles which do and which do not adhere to the surface as a result of freezing effects are separately recovered from the surface, for example in bins (24, 26) separated by a divider (28).
