A stream of molten glass is supplied to the upper end of a refining vessel where it falls through an open space maintained at reduced pressure so that the material is at least partially foamed and then collects as a layer of foam above a layer of glass. The flow is subdivided into multiple streams by encountering a solid body within the space. The appts. comprises a vessel adapted to hold the molten glass with a free space above, and for operation at reduced pressure. The device made of platinum or platinum alloy may be a grid or mesh, or may be horizontally extending throngh.
