PURPOSE:To prevent abrupt increase of engine speed under loadless conditions and speed change shock by establishing a specified speed change step via the other speed change steps in case of changing the speed to a specified speed change step at the time of start or in the case of changing a manual shift range. CONSTITUTION:A transmission comprising two sets of planetary gears is adapted to achieve a designed speed change step by selectively connecting clutches 38, 40, 42, 44 and brakes 46, 48. At the time of changing the speed from the forth speed in D range to the second speed without change of manual shift range, an input clutch 38 is quickly engaged to avoid abrupt increase of engine speed under loadless conditions. On the other hand, in the case of establishing a specified speed change step at the time of start or in case of changing a manual shift range, for example, in case of changing the speed from the forth speed in D range to the second speed, once the first speed is established, and then the input clutch 38 for connecting an input shaft 52 and a sun gear 20 is slowly engaged. Thus, the occurrence of speed change shock can be avoided. |
