PURPOSE: To treat the abuse and addiction of addictive drugs by administration of an effective amount of an azapyrone compound or its acid-added salt. CONSTITUTION: An effective amount of a compound of formula I [Z is a group of formula II to formula V (a real line with a dotted line denotes a single or double bond; A is O, CH2 , CH2 CH2 or CH=CH; R<3> and R<4> are each H, a 1-4C alkyl, or joined together into butanediyl or pentanediyl); R<1> and R<2> are joined together into a group of formula VI, or such that R<1> is H and R<2> a group of formula VII] or a pharmaceutically effective acid added salt thereof, e.g. buspirone, gepirone, ipsapirone, is administered to treat overeating, food intake disorders, and drug addiction including addictive use of cigarettes, marihuana, cocaine, opium agents, methadone, amphetamines, methylphenidate and related designer drugs, and other recreational drugs. The daily therapeutically effective dose of the compound is 10-80 (pref. 30-60)mg. |
