An aromatic hydrocarbon represented by the following general formula [I]: <IMAGE> (I) wherein R1, R2 and R3 stand for a hydrogen atom or alkyl group, is reacted with a halogenated sulfonic acid in the presence of a Lewis acid to obtain an aromatic sulfone compound represented by the following general formula [II]: <IMAGE> (II) wherein R1, R2 and R3 are as defined above and Z stands for a halogen atom or an aromatic hydrocarbon group represented by the following general formula [III]: <IMAGE> (III) in which R1, R2 and R3 are as defined above.
