The present invention relates to a process for the synthesis of symmetrical ureas by reacting carbon dioxide with a primary amine in a solvent in the presence of an ethynylic derivative and of a ruthenium, iron or osmium complex as catalyst. The ethynylic derivative can act as solvent. The reaction is generally carried out in an autoclave under a CO2 pressure of between 1 and 10 MPa, at a temperature between 100 and 160 DEG C. The symmetrical ureas are especially used in pharmacology, agrochemistry and cosmetology.
