PURPOSE:To increase energy density, to lengthen cycle life, and to decrease self-discharge rate by specifically combining an electrode component and an electrolyte. CONSTITUTION:A battery has a positive electrode 1, a negative electrode 6, and a nonaqueous electrolyte. The negative electrode 6 is a complex of a sodium alloy, a carbon material, and a binder. The nonaqueous electrolyte is prepared by dissolving a sodium salt or a sodium salt and an alkyl ammonium salt in N-methyl pyrrolidone or the mixed solvent of N-methyl pyrrolidone and an ether compound. The positive electrode 1 consists mainly of sodium.cobalt oxide. The activity of sodium is reduced by the sodium salt and side reaction with the electrolyte is retarded. By dispersing the conductive carbon material in the electrode and impregnating the electrolyte in the electrode, effective surface area is increased, effective current density is reduced, and the deformation or breakage of the electrode attendant on charge-discharge can be retained. |
