A circuit for ignition and operation of a vapour discharge lamp 11 comprises a DC power supply 73 which generates a DC power supply voltage, a high-voltage generator 16, 18, which generates a high DC initial or igniting voltage from the DC power supply voltage and passes the high DC ignition voltage to the vapour discharge lamp 11 so that a current flow through the lamp is produced, an inductor 15, which is connected in a closed loop circuit together with the vapour discharge lamp 11, a detector 48 which is connected to the closed loop circuit for the detection of transmission of power in the same, and a power change-over switch 59, 60 which can be switched between a conductive state in which power or current is induced in the inductor 15 and a non-conductive state in which power or current is not induced in the inductor 15, which power change-over switch is controlled by the detector 48. <IMAGE> |
