A window 4 slides vertically in a frame 2. A balancing device 9 comprises an oscillating lever 11 bearing by means of a roller 13 under the lower edge 16 of the window. The return means 33 acts on the arm 11 by means of two supporting arms 17, 18, the axis-to-axis lines 31, 32 of which converge at a point C which, when the device is fully deployed, is located substantially in the region of the axis 12 of the roller 13. By virtue of construction, the point C is the instantaneous centre of rotation of the arm 11. Because of its position, the axis 12 has a substantially vertical movement. The invention is used for increasing the travel, reducing the overall size in terms of width and, by action in the mid-axis of the window, reducing the risks of jamming. <IMAGE>
