The invention concerns an arrangement allowing humans to operate for a prolonged period in a polluted atmosphere. The arrangement comprises a body suit S consisting of a one-piece garment which is flexible, airtight and strong, and completed by a rigid helmet which permits vision, this body suit constituting a false lung connected via two disconnectable hoses (flexible conduits) A, R to a case which contains means 3-18 for removing, regenerating, controlling and returning the air contained in the body suit in such a way that the user breathes freely in the body suit, the length of the hoses (conduits) A, R being chosen in such a way that the case V can be carried by hand without either of the hoses (conduits) touching the ground, and in such a way that the case can be positioned close to the user or on the user's back.
