For generating propellant gases in propellant combustion chambers of tube weapons, liquid propellants are to be provided with which, in addition to complete conversion, a gas pressure curve can be realised which, in the burn-off rate, is adapted to the burn-off time corresponding to the particular requirements specific to the weapon and projectile and is very largely oscillation-free and plateau-like. According to the invention, this object is achieved by a monergolic or non-hypergolic liquid propellant which contains up to 40 per cent by weight of additives which modify the burn-off characteristics, preferably inhibitors. The starting materials used are aliphatic compounds, preferably nitrated alkanes or nitrates of the alkanes, for example isopropyl nitrate or nitromethane. For moderating the burn-off, alcohols, for example methyl alcohol or isopropyl alcohol, are mixed as inhibitors with the starting material. The inhibitors and/or liquid propellants contain further additives which, as free-radical scavengers, very largely prevent the gas pressure oscillation and can produce a plateau-like gas pressure curve 4,5. By varying the starting material, the inhibitors and the additives of the inhibitors and/or liquid propellants, gas pressure curves can be obtained which are very largely oscillation-free but can be varied in the burn-off characteristics, in particular in burn-off time and in pressure level. <IMAGE>
