The supply has an AC motor 1 energised from a mains supply and driving an alternator 2 which supplies electric power to a load, a diesel engine 7 controlled to supply power to drive the alternator 2 directly or indirectly, (Fig. 2), in the event of a fault in the mains supply, and a hydraulic (or pneumatic) motor 8 operable to drive alternator 2 to ensure smooth transaction between power derived from the mains supply and power derived from engine 7. The motor 6 is supplied from a vessel 12 pressurised by a pump 5. The motor 8 may be used to drive alternator 2 until the engine 7 has run up to speed, the engine 7 being connected to alternator 2 via couplings 9. In their case the pump 5 is driven by AC motor 1. Alternatively, (Figure 2), the motor 8 may drive the alternator 2 throughout a mains failure period, the pump 5 then being driven by the engine 7 which is operated as necessary to maintain adequate pressure in the vessel 12.
